His symphonic music is the first to receive widespread acceptance for its unique integration of electronic sounds. His opera,\u00a0<em>The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs,<\/em>\u00a0was hailed as one of the best-selling productions in the history of Santa Fe Opera and recently won the Grammy for Best Opera Recording. As a composer, curator, and DJ, Mr. Bates is an advocate for bringing new music to new spaces. His club\/classical project Mercury Soul transforms commercial clubs into hybrid musical events.<\/p>\n<p>The 2018-19 season features the premiere of two symphonic works.\u00a0The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra opened its season with\u00a0<em>Resurrexit,<\/em>\u00a0which animates a biblical narrative with propulsion and theatricality.\u00a0The National Symphony Orchestra premiered\u00a0<em>Art of War,\u00a0<\/em>which features\u00a0original field recordings of weapons testing at Camp Pendleton and printing presses at the U.S. Treasury.<\/p>\n<p>Bringing classical music to new audiences is a central part of Mr. Bates\u2019 activities. With composer Anna Clyne, he transformed the Chicago Symphony\u2019s MusicNOW series with cinematic program notes and immersive stagecraft.\u00a0Mr. Bates is the first composer-in-residence of the Kennedy Center. This season, his\u00a0<em>KC Jukebox<\/em>\u00a0series features analogue synth composers\u00a0Kyle Dixon and Michael Klein, known for their distinctive score to the Netflix series\u00a0<em>Stranger Things<\/em>, as well as Pulitzer Prize-winner Caroline Shaw, Scottish balladier King Creosote, and the beloved chorus Chanticleer.<\/p>\n<p>Working in clubs under the name DJ Masonic, Mr. Bates has developed a post-classical rave that integrates classical music and electronica.
