{"id":9048,"date":"2022-01-19T06:30:49","date_gmt":"2022-01-19T13:30:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.svmusicfestival.org\/staging\/?post_type=news_posts&#038;p=9048"},"modified":"2022-02-16T15:44:50","modified_gmt":"2022-02-16T22:44:50","slug":"2022-summer-season","status":"publish","type":"news_posts","link":"https:\/\/www.svmusicfestival.org\/staging\/news_posts\/2022-summer-season\/","title":{"rendered":"Sun Valley Music Festival Announces 38th Summer Season, July 24-August 18, 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>The largest privately funded, admission-free classical music festival in the United States presents over three weeks of world-class performances this summer in an outdoor alpine setting, led by Music Director Alasdair Neale<\/h3>\n<p><em>This season <\/em><em>highlights three <\/em><em>of the country\u2019s greatest living composers \u2013 Gabriela Lena Frank, Jessie Montgomery, and Kevin Puts \u2013 and features performances from renowned <\/em><em>guest artists: pianists Daniil Trifonov and George Li, violinist Leila Josefowicz, tenor Nicholas Phan, guest conductor Andy Einhorn, and the genre-defying string trio Time For Three.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Sun Valley Music Festival<\/strong> is proud to announce details of its upcoming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.svmusicfestival.org\/staging\/summer-season\/\"><strong>Summer Season,<\/strong> <strong>July 24-August 18<\/strong><\/a> at the outdoor, state-of-the-art Sun Valley Pavilion in Idaho. The season features over 14 admission-free concerts alongside a gala fundraising concert and multiple outreach and education events. Since 1985, Festival Orchestra musicians have come together from distinguished ensembles across North America to perform orchestral and chamber concerts each summer. This year\u2019s massive orchestral repertoire is as vast as Sun Valley\u2019s mountainous setting, ranging from Strauss&#8217;s &#8220;Alpine Symphony&#8221; and familiar works by Beethoven, Brahms, and Tchaikovsky to 20<sup>th<\/sup>-century treasures by Lili Boulanger and Stravinsky to a special emphasis on music by living composers. Guest artists include pianists<a href=\"https:\/\/www.svmusicfestival.org\/staging\/people\/trifonov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong> Daniil Trifonov <\/strong><\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.svmusicfestival.org\/staging\/people\/george-li\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>George Li<\/strong><\/a>, violinist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.svmusicfestival.org\/staging\/people\/josefowicz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Leila Josefowicz<\/strong><\/a>, tenor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.svmusicfestival.org\/staging\/people\/nicholas-phan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Nicholas Phan<\/strong><\/a>, conductor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.svmusicfestival.org\/staging\/people\/andy-einhorn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Andy Einhorn<\/strong><\/a>, and the genre-defying trio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.svmusicfestival.org\/staging\/people\/tf3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Time For Three<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Furthering its commitment to new music following the overwhelmingly successful world-premiere of <strong>Jessie Montgomery<\/strong>\u2019s <em>Five Freedom Songs<\/em> last summer, the Sun Valley Music Festival launches its 38<sup>th<\/sup> season with Montgomery\u2019s <em>Banner<\/em>. Highlights of this year&#8217;s contemporary orchestral repertoire include <strong>Gabriela Lena Frank<\/strong>\u2019s Three Latin American Dances for Orchestra and <strong>Kevin Puts<\/strong>\u2019s <em>Contact<\/em>, a Festival co-commission.<\/p>\n<p>Music Director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.svmusicfestival.org\/staging\/music-director\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Alasdair Neale <\/strong><\/a>comments, \u201cWe are delighted to present once again a series of orchestral and chamber performances of the highest caliber from an all-star orchestra and top-notch soloists, free of charge, all in a setting of breathtaking beauty.\u00a0The joy of music connects our community and brings us together in the majestic surroundings of the Sun Valley Pavilion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Festival Orchestra<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Festival launches its Summer Season with three chamber orchestra concerts, starting with a patriotic season opener on July 24 featuring Jessie Montgomery&#8217;s <em>Banner<\/em> and Beethoven\u2019s \u201cEmperor\u201d concerto, with pianist George Li. The spotlight shines on principal cellist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.svmusicfestival.org\/staging\/people\/amos-yang\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Amos Yang<\/strong><\/a> for Tchaikovsky\u2019s Rococo Variations on July 26 and the July 29 concert features tenor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.svmusicfestival.org\/staging\/people\/nicholas-phan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Nicholas Phan<\/strong><\/a> and works by Britten and Ravel that were inspired, respectively, by poems and fairytales. This season features many gems from the orchestral repertoire, including the opening full orchestra performance on August 2, an evening of Beethoven that starts with his grand <em>Leonore Overture<\/em> No. 3 and concludes with his cheerful \u201cPastoral\u201d sixth symphony. Brahms\u2019s Piano Concerto No. 2 will pair the Festival Orchestra with \u201cthe most astounding pianist of our age\u201d (<em>The Times <\/em>of London), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.svmusicfestival.org\/staging\/people\/trifonov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Daniil Trifonov<\/strong><\/a>, on August 4. Principal trumpet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.svmusicfestival.org\/staging\/people\/andrew-mccandless\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Andrew McCandless<\/strong><\/a> is featured with the orchestra for John Estacio\u2019s Trumpet Concerto along with works by Manuel de\u00a0Falla and Jos\u00e9 Pablo Moncayo on August 6. On August 8, Neale presents the lovely and too-rarely-heard first symphony by the British composer Edward Elgar.<\/p>\n<p>Other 2022 artistic highlights include Avery Fisher Prize-winning violinist\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.svmusicfestival.org\/staging\/people\/josefowicz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Leila Josefowicz<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s return to Sun Valley, performing Stravinksy&#8217;s violin concerto on an evening also featuring works by Lili Boulanger and Tchaikovsky on August 9. On August 13, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.svmusicfestival.org\/staging\/people\/tf3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Time For Three <\/strong><\/a>joins the orchestra for <strong>Kevin Puts\u2019<\/strong>s <em>Contact<\/em>, a Festival co-commission. <strong>Gabriela Lena <\/strong><strong>Frank\u2019s <\/strong>Three Latin American Dances for Orchestra completes the program that evening.<\/p>\n<p>Following a traditional rousing rendition of the Armed Forces Medley, Broadway music director and conductor<a href=\"https:\/\/www.svmusicfestival.org\/staging\/people\/andy-einhorn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong> Andy Einhorn <\/strong><\/a>leads the August 14 Pops Night, titled The Best of Americana, featuring familiar and fun works from film, Broadway, and much-loved composers. Continue the evening and dance the night away with a lively performance on the Pavilion lawn for the Festival\u2019s third Lawn Party.<\/p>\n<p>Music Director Alasdair Neale concludes the summer on August 18 with Richard Strauss\u2019s <em>&#8220;<\/em>Alpine Symphony<em>&#8220;<\/em>, which is seldom heard on the classical music festival circuit due to the orchestra&#8217;s massive size (including a section of 18 horns). It&#8217;s a fitting finale that celebrates the splendor and natural beauty of an alpine setting \u2014 epitomizing the Sun Valley experience.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chamber Music<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A chamber recital on July 28 features <a href=\"https:\/\/www.svmusicfestival.org\/staging\/people\/george-li\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>George Li <\/strong><\/a>with Festival musicians performing music by Schubert and Schumann. The Festival&#8217;s resident string quartet, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.svmusicfestival.org\/staging\/people\/edgar-m-bronfman-string-quartet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Edgar M. Bronfman String Quartet<\/strong><\/a>, plays Haydn and Brahms on August 11, and a special Hornucopia concert, featuring 16 of the finest horn players in North America, concludes the Festival\u2019s summer chamber performances on August 16.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Education Programs \u2013 Sun Valley Music Festival Music Institute <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Festival provides year-round music education programs to students of all ages and abilities through its Music Institute, which celebrates its 25<sup>th<\/sup> year in 2022. This summer, students in grades 2-12 can participate in programs for most orchestral\u00a0instruments, voice, and piano August 1-5, while college undergraduates and\u00a0exceptional high school students studying piano, strings, and voice can participate in the Advanced Chamber Program July 25-August 6. Participants hone their musical\u00a0skills and work on performance pieces with Sun Valley Music Festival musicians,\u00a0conductors, and guest artists \u2013 including <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.svmusicfestival.org\/staging\/people\/trifonov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniil Trifonov<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.svmusicfestival.org\/staging\/people\/george-li\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">George Li<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.svmusicfestival.org\/staging\/people\/nicholas-phan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nicholas Phan<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 while also attending orchestra rehearsals and concerts. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.svmusicfestival.org\/staging\/summer-programs\/\"><strong>More information about education programs, including registration, which is now open, can be found on the Festival&#8217;s website.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>How To Attend <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Festival is monitoring health considerations closely and is committed to bringing music to the community safely.
