Since 1985, the Festival has brought together world-class musicians from distinguished orchestras across North America to perform three weeks of free chamber and orchestral concerts each summer. This season\u2019s lineup includes a special \u201cBeethoven @ 250 series;\u201d concerts featuring guest artists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.svmusicfestival.org\/staging\/people\/josefowicz\/\"><strong>Leila Josefowicz<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.svmusicfestival.org\/staging\/people\/trifonov\/\"><strong>Daniil Trifonov<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.svmusicfestival.org\/staging\/people\/weiss\/\"><strong>Orion Weiss<\/strong><\/a>, and string trio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.svmusicfestival.org\/staging\/people\/tf3\/\"><strong>Time for Three<\/strong><\/a>; and\u2014performed by the latter\u2014a triple concerto by <strong>Kevin Puts<\/strong>, a Festival co-commission with the Philadelphia Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, and Florida Orchestra. All Festival performances take place at the state-of-the-art Sun Valley Pavilion amphitheater at 6:30 p.m., except where specified otherwise.<\/p>\n<p>Music Director Alasdair Neale said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI\u2019m looking forward to this summer\u2019s festival for so many reasons: the celebration of Beethoven\u2019s 250<sup>th<\/sup> birthday, for one; the return of Time for Three, for another. Then there\u2019s Daniil Trifonov, the sensational pianist who\u2019s electrified the world\u2019s great concert halls whilst still in his twenties. But most of all I\u2019m looking forward to making music again in the unmatched setting of the Sun Valley Pavilion with my dear friends and colleagues from top orchestras around the country. So many of them\u2014like me\u2014cannot resist the siren song of Sun Valley and the pleasure of performing for our devoted and appreciative audiences each summer!\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The season opens with a series of events commemorating the 250<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of Beethoven\u2019s birth. Titled \u201cBeethoven @ 250,\u201d this special celebration encompasses orchestral performances, chamber music recitals, and guest artists, both in the morning (10:30 a.m.) at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.comlib.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Community Library<\/a> and in the evening (6:30 p.m.) at the Sun Valley Pavilion. Pianist Orion Weiss, Gilmore Young Artist Award winner and Avery Fisher Career Grant recipient, will perform July 27 and 30 for the celebration.\u00a0The Community Library and the Music Festival are collaborating to bring Author, composer, and noted Beethoven scholar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.svmusicfestival.org\/staging\/people\/jan-swafford\/\"><strong>Jan Swafford <\/strong><\/a>to Sun Valley. His 2014 book \u201cBeethoven: Anguish and Triumph<em>\u201d<\/em> was selected as Editor\u2019s Choice in \u201cThe New York Times\u2019\u201d Book Review. Swafford will offer two lectures in the John A. and Carole O. Moran Lecture Hall at the Community Library on July 29 and 31.<\/p>\n<p>The summer will also showcase several guest artists joining the Festival Orchestra, including &#8220;Musical America\u2019s&#8221;\u00a02019 Artist of the Year, pianist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.svmusicfestival.org\/staging\/event\/trifonov-brahms\/\"><strong>Daniil Trifonov <\/strong>on Aug. 4<\/a>. Trifonov has been described by the London \u201cTimes<em>\u201d <\/em>as \u201cwithout question the most astounding pianist of our age.\u201d His many awards and honors include a Grammy Award for Best Classical Instrumental Solo and both First Prize and Grand Prix at the International Tchaikovsky Competition. Avery Fisher Prize violinist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.svmusicfestival.org\/staging\/event\/russian-masters\/\">Leila Josefowicz performs Stravinsky&#8217;s Violin Concerto<\/a>, a work she has performed with top orchestras around the world, on Aug. 9. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.svmusicfestival.org\/staging\/event\/american-music\/\">Saturday, Aug. 15 sees the return of <strong>Time for Three<\/strong><\/a> to the Pavilion stage, performing a new composition by Pulitzer Prize-winning American composer Kevin Puts. A co-commission of the Sun Valley Music Festival, San Francisco Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, and Florida Orchestra, the work was written for the genre-defying string trio. The traditional \u201cArmed Services Medley\u201d will open this evening of American music. <strong>Jacomo Bairos<\/strong> will guest conduct the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.svmusicfestival.org\/staging\/event\/pops-villalobos\/\">Pops concert on Aug. 16 with contemporary Mexican ensemble <\/a><strong>The Villalobos Brothers, <\/strong>followed by a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.svmusicfestival.org\/staging\/event\/fiesta-de-baile\/\">post-concert lawn party<\/a> with the ensemble.<\/p>\n<p>The season\u2019s orchestral program highlights include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.svmusicfestival.org\/staging\/event\/symphonic-dances\/\">Jennifer Higdon\u2019s \u201cblue cathedral<em>\u201d <\/em>with Rachmaninoff\u2019s \u201cSymphonic Dances<em>\u201d<\/em> on Aug. 6<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.svmusicfestival.org\/staging\/event\/mendelssohn-and-mazzoli\/\">Mendelssohn\u2019s Symphony No. 3 on Aug. 11<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.svmusicfestival.org\/staging\/event\/mozart-la-mer\/\">Debussy\u2019s \u201cLa Mer<em>\u201d <\/em>on Aug. 14<\/a>, and\u2014to close the season\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.svmusicfestival.org\/staging\/event\/symphonie-fantastique\/\">Berlioz\u2019s \u201cSymphonie fantastique<em>\u201d<\/em> on Aug. 19<\/a>. On Aug. 8, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.svmusicfestival.org\/staging\/event\/american-west\/\">Festival\u2019s Family Concert<\/a> will feature music that depicts the American west, like Rossini\u2019s Overture to \u201cWilliam Tell<em>\u201d <\/em>and Randy Newman\u2019s \u201cYou\u2019ve Got a Friend in Me\u201d from \u201cToy Story,\u201d before students of the Festival\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.svmusicfestival.org\/staging\/summer-programs\/advanced-chamber-program\/\">Music Institute Advanced Chamber Program<\/a> join the orchestra to perform selections from Copland\u2019s \u201cRodeo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.svmusicfestival.org\/staging\/summer-season\/\"><strong>A complete list of 2020 Summer Season performances and events can be found here.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In addition to its lineup of all admission-free concerts, the Festival offers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.svmusicfestival.org\/staging\/summer-programs\/\">summer education programs through its Music Institute<\/a>, providing instruction for most orchestral instruments as well as piano and voice. Students range from second graders to advanced college undergraduates, who travel from across the country to hone their skills, develop their artistic sensibilities, and make music (and new friends) in the Festival\u2019s unique environment. This year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.svmusicfestival.org\/staging\/summer-programs\/for-grades-2-12\/\">programs for students in grades 2-12<\/a> are offered from Aug. 3-7. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.svmusicfestival.org\/staging\/summer-programs\/advanced-chamber-program\/\">Advanced Chamber Program<\/a> takes place from July 27 to Aug. 8 and is geared towards experienced students who are committed to serious study in their discipline.
