SUMMARY:Upbeat with Alasdair: Why Brahms?
DESCRIPTION:Admission is free. Space is limited; reservations are required to attend in person. Reservations open to the public on Wednesday\, February 21 at 9:00 AM (MT) \nClick here to reserve\nThe Sun Valley Music Festival is pleased to present Upbeat with Alasdair\, featuring pianist Jon Kimura Parker\, Concertmaster Jeremy Constant\, and Principal Cello Amos Yang in conversation with Music Director Alasdair Neale.  Parker will feature prominently in the Festival’s upcoming Winter Season concerts at the Argyros\, March 6-9.  This year’s program\, entitled “The Romance of Brahms\,” is the first time the Festival’s Winter Season will focus on the music of a single composer: Johannes Brahms.  Accordingly\, in this edition of the popular series of talks\, Neale\, Parker\, and two Festival musicians will explore the music of Brahms\, revealing why Brahms continues to be such a beloved composer both for musicians and audiences. \nThe Upbeat with Alasdair series provides a unique\, behind-the-scenes perspective on music and upcoming Festival performances.  It also offers the community a chance to get to know more about Alasdair Neale\, the Festival Orchestra\, and guest artists.  In this case\, the audience will have the opportunity to learn why these four musicians are so excited to offer audiences this in-depth experience of the great composer’s chamber music.  Following the talk\, Maestro Neale\, Jon Kimura Parker\, Jeremy Constant\, and Amos Yang will answer audience questions.  Parker\, who is known for his charisma\, infectious enthusiasm\, and dynamic performances\, was recently named Creative Partner for the Minnesota Orchestra’s Summer at Orchestra Hall.  He also serves as the Artistic Director for the Honens International Piano Competition\, and serves on the faculty of the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University. \nViewers can enjoy the talk in person at the Community Library lecture hall (415 Spruce Ave\, Ketchum) or broadcast live on the Festival’s website. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. (MT). The presentation begins at 6:30 p.m. (MT). \nReservations are required to attend in person and begin Wednesday\, February 21 at 9:00 a.m. (MT) on the Festival’s website\, or you may contact the Festival office at info@svmusicfestival.org or 208-622-5607. Reserve your seats early\, as space is currently limited in the Library’s lecture hall. Reservations are accepted in the order they are received; reservations made online are received faster. Once reservations are full\, you can join the wait list by contacting the Festival office. Capacity is unlimited for the online broadcast and reservations are not required to watch online. Only in-person attendees will be able to participate in the Q&A session that will take place towards the end of the presentation. \n

SUMMARY:Upbeat with Alasdair: The Rite of Spring: 110 Years Old and Still Breaking the Rules
DESCRIPTION:It’s hard to imagine a piece of classical music causing a riot\, but that’s the word often applied to the audience’s reaction when Igor Stravinsky’s ballet The Rite of Spring debuted in 1913 in Paris. Apparently\, the arguments between those who loved it and those who hated it became so heated the dancers couldn’t hear the orchestra! Stravinsky’s music (and Nijinsky’s choreography) broke with tradition so dramatically that the piece is often called the first example of modernism in music. In this installation of Upbeat with Alasdair\, Maestro Alasdair Neale will describe not just the innovation\, but the beauty of Rite of Spring\, which the Festival will present during the upcoming Summer Season. \nHow to attend\nReservations are currently full for the Wednesday\, January 4 talk at the Community Library. But there are still ways to attend. The event will also be broadcast above on this page or on the Festival’s YouTube channel. If you prefer to attend in person\, please click here to add yourself to the waitlist online or contact the Festival office at info@svmusicfestival.org or 208.622.5607. If you have already made reservations but won’t be able to attend\, please contact the Festival so your seats may be released to individuals on the waitlist. Those on the waitlist will be contacted in the order their requests were received when seating becomes available. \nCapacity is unlimited for the online broadcast; reservations are not required to watch online. Doors open at 6:00 PM (MT) for those attending in person. The presentation begins at 6:30 PM (MT) for both in-person and online attendees. Only in-person attendees will be able to participate in the Q&A session that will take place toward the end of the presentation. \nClick here to find helpful tips to get the best broadcast experience\, such as how to watch the event from your home theater system.

SUMMARY:Gankino Horo\, featuring Time For Three and Kevin Puts
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a broadcast performance of Gankino Horo above\, featuring Time For Three and composer Kevin Puts. And learn more below about how this Bulgarian folk tune provided some of the inspiration for Contact\, a concerto for Time For Three and orchestra that was co-commissioned by the Festival.\nIf you enjoyed the 2022 summer performance of Contact—or even if you missed it—you’re in for a treat! Contact is a concerto for Time For Three with orchestra\, which the Sun Valley Music Festival co-commissioned from the Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Kevin Puts. \nContact recently received two Grammy nominations: Time For Three was nominated for Best Classical Instrumental Solo for their recording with the Philadelphia Orchestra\, and Kevin Puts received a nomination for Best Contemporary Classical Composition. \nThe Festival’s history with the piece goes way back. The idea for a collaboration between Kevin Puts and Time For Three originated during a hike up Bald Mountain\, Sun Valley’s iconic ski hill\, many years ago\, when Alasdair and Time For Three’s Nick Kendall  were brainstorming ways they might work together. Later\, Alasdair shared the idea with Kevin Puts and helped broker an introduction between the composer and the string trio. \nIn 2020\, when the Festival produced its Summer Season online\, Alasdair asked Time For Three and Puts if they would perform a bit of Contact. The full score was still a work in progress\, but Kevin suggested they play Gankino Horo\, a Bulgarian folk tune that was his inspiration for the fourth movement\, and he offered to accompany Time For Three on the piano. The resulting performance was broadcast during the 2020 virtual season. \nNow\, in honor of the Grammy nominations\, the Festival is pleased to re-release the recording of Gankino Horo. Please enjoy it from the embedded video player above\, and feel free to share it with your friends! \nCongratulations to our dear friends\, Time For Three and Kevin Puts!

SUMMARY:2022 Gala Concert: Carmina Burana

SUMMARY:Upbeat with Alasdair: In Conversation with Jennifer Koh
DESCRIPTION:The broadcast will be available here on the Festival website beginning February 22.\nYou may also watch from the Festival’s YouTube page or by steaming on a smart TV through the YouTube app. \n\nMusic Director Alasdair Neale will engage superstar violinist\, and curator of the Festival’s upcoming Winter Season\, Jennifer Koh in conversation around the many ways in which she has forged her own path in classical music. This includes her noted project “Alone Together\,” in which she commissioned 40 news works for solo violin during the pandemic—some of which Winter Season concertgoers will hear later in the week. The project met three of her goals: adding new music to the repertoire\, engaging new and diverse artists\, and bringing music to people in new ways. Join Neale and Koh as they talk about the future of classical music and the roles that composers\, musicians\, and conductors have to play.

SUMMARY:Upbeat with Alasdair: What Does a Conductor Do\, Anyway?
DESCRIPTION:Click here to watch the broadcast from the Festival’s YouTube page. For the best viewing experience\, watch from YouTube on a smart TV or streaming device—just search for Sun Valley Music Festival in the YouTube app (you may need to install the YouTube app first). Click here for more online viewing tips. \n\nPeople have been using batons to “conduct” since the end of the 7th century\, and the practice has become increasingly prevalent since. But why? As modern instruments developed\, resulting in larger ensembles\, helping musicians play together became more difficult. Conductors do that\, but much more. They also shape phrases and interpret the composer’s intent. Find out how it all works\, when Music Director Alasdair Neale hosts the next installment of his popular Upbeat with Alasdair speaking series\, in person at the Community Library and livestreamed above on the Festival’s website and YouTube channel.

DESCRIPTION:The concert was broadcast from October 29\, 2021-November 5\, 2021 and is no longer available. \nClick here to view other Festival videos on YouTube. Be sure to subscribe to the Festival’s YouTube page for broadcast news and notifications\, and for enhanced broadcast experiences on your home theater or mobile devices.  \n\nGretchen Van Hoesen\, Harp \n\nGary Shocker\nQuest from Quest-Reunion \n  \nDavid Watkins\nFire Dance from Petite Suite for Harp \n\nThe harp is one of the oldest instruments (originating around 15\,000 BC) that is still played today. It’s a fitting vehicle for the music on this program. Performed first is a work titled “Quest” from “Quest-Reunion” by Gary Shocker\, a composer renowned for his melodic style and his work as one of today’s greatest flutists. Throughout the piece\, contemplative phrases interplay with moments of innocence and transcendence. Following is living composer and harpist David Watkins’s award-winning “Fire Dance” from Petite Suite for Harp. Its powerful\, rhythmic—and sometimes vivacious—melodies were inspired by native South American ritual dances and cultural music performed on the smaller Paraguayan harp.

SUMMARY:2021 Honors Recital
DESCRIPTION:Performance is an integral part of the education programs offered at the Sun Valley Music Festival’s Music Institute. Students not only prepare for informal departmental recitals but also participate in juried adjudications and regional and state competitions. The academic year culminates with the Institute’s Honors Recital\, where students audition for a chance to perform. Usually open to the public\, this year’s recital took place on May 1 to a small in-person audience in Hailey\, Idaho—the first live audience the education programs have been able to host in over a year. The concert concluded with the Carol Nie Outstanding Music Student Award\, where one exceptional student was presented scholarship funds to help them continue their musical pursuits. \n\nPlease enjoy the broadcast presentation and join the Festival in celebrating the achievements of these outstanding young musicians: \nLeila Brickley\, Alexia Crowdson\, Anne Cunyas\, Julia Sinnamon (1:58)\nGeorg Philipp Telemann: Concerto for 4 Violins in G Major\, No. 1\n  I. Click here to view other upcoming performances \nShare the broadcast with your Facebook friends:\n \n\n\nBach\nCello Suite No. 6 in D Major\, BWV 1012\nAmos Yang\, Cello \n\nExplore the grandeur\, complexity\, and lively harmonies within one of classical music’s most iconic and profound works\, Bach’s Sixth Cello Suite\, for the next Festival @ Home performance. Although Bach’s suites are now considered by many to be the most significant works in the solo cello repertoire\, they languished in quiet obscurity for over 150 years. In 1890\, cello virtuoso Pablo Casals discovered tattered copies of the suites at a second-hand shop in Barcelona. His appreciation for them grew as he studied them\, leading to his seminal audio recordings in 1936\, which paved the way for their current fame. \nTune in for the premiere on Tuesday\, March 16 at 6:30 PM MT (or on demand for 48 hours afterward) on the Festival website\, YouTube channel (youtube.com/c/SunValleyMusicFestival)\, and Facebook page (facebook.com/SunValleyMusicFestival). Don’t miss this all-new performance of an eminent piece for solo cello\, performed by Sun Valley favorite\, Principal Cello Amos Yang\, from the beautiful Kohl Mansion near San Francisco\, CA. \nWant to get the best broadcast experience?\nClick here for helpful tips\, such as how to watch from your home theater system \n

Offering his thoughts\, Music Director Alasdair Neale says “In a crowded field\, it is one of Mozart’s greatest achievements\, filled with pathos and joy\, tenderness and turmoil.”
