SUMMARY:Upbeat with Alasdair: The Rite of Spring: 110 Years Old and Still Breaking the Rules
DESCRIPTION:It’s hard to imagine a piece of classical music causing a riot\, but that’s the word often applied to the audience’s reaction when Igor Stravinsky’s ballet The Rite of Spring debuted in 1913 in Paris. Apparently\, the arguments between those who loved it and those who hated it became so heated the dancers couldn’t hear the orchestra! Stravinsky’s music (and Nijinsky’s choreography) broke with tradition so dramatically that the piece is often called the first example of modernism in music. In this installation of Upbeat with Alasdair\, Maestro Alasdair Neale will describe not just the innovation\, but the beauty of Rite of Spring\, which the Festival will present during the upcoming Summer Season. \nHow to attend\nReservations are currently full for the Wednesday\, January 4 talk at the Community Library. But there are still ways to attend. The event will also be broadcast above on this page or on the Festival’s YouTube channel. If you prefer to attend in person\, please click here to add yourself to the waitlist online or contact the Festival office at info@svmusicfestival.org or 208.622.5607. If you have already made reservations but won’t be able to attend\, please contact the Festival so your seats may be released to individuals on the waitlist. Those on the waitlist will be contacted in the order their requests were received when seating becomes available. \nCapacity is unlimited for the online broadcast; reservations are not required to watch online. Doors open at 6:00 PM (MT) for those attending in person. The presentation begins at 6:30 PM (MT) for both in-person and online attendees. Only in-person attendees will be able to participate in the Q&A session that will take place toward the end of the presentation. \nClick here to find helpful tips to get the best broadcast experience\, such as how to watch the event from your home theater system.

SUMMARY:Upbeat with Alasdair: In Conversation with Jennifer Koh
DESCRIPTION:The broadcast will be available here on the Festival website beginning February 22.\nYou may also watch from the Festival’s YouTube page or by steaming on a smart TV through the YouTube app. \n\nMusic Director Alasdair Neale will engage superstar violinist\, and curator of the Festival’s upcoming Winter Season\, Jennifer Koh in conversation around the many ways in which she has forged her own path in classical music. This includes her noted project “Alone Together\,” in which she commissioned 40 news works for solo violin during the pandemic—some of which Winter Season concertgoers will hear later in the week. The project met three of her goals: adding new music to the repertoire\, engaging new and diverse artists\, and bringing music to people in new ways. Join Neale and Koh as they talk about the future of classical music and the roles that composers\, musicians\, and conductors have to play.

SUMMARY:Upbeat with Alasdair: What Does a Conductor Do\, Anyway?
DESCRIPTION:Click here to watch the broadcast from the Festival’s YouTube page. For the best viewing experience\, watch from YouTube on a smart TV or streaming device—just search for Sun Valley Music Festival in the YouTube app (you may need to install the YouTube app first). Click here for more online viewing tips. \n\nPeople have been using batons to “conduct” since the end of the 7th century\, and the practice has become increasingly prevalent since. But why? As modern instruments developed\, resulting in larger ensembles\, helping musicians play together became more difficult. Conductors do that\, but much more. They also shape phrases and interpret the composer’s intent. Find out how it all works\, when Music Director Alasdair Neale hosts the next installment of his popular Upbeat with Alasdair speaking series\, in person at the Community Library and livestreamed above on the Festival’s website and YouTube channel.
